A group of engineers and researchers working out of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography over at the University of California San Diego have developed an innovative new underwater microscope that is designed to make it easier than ever for scientists to monitor and observe the barely visible interactions that take place on the ocean floor.

The Benthic Underwater Microscope is the very first instrument to be able to capture accurate images of organisms on the seafloor with resolution close to a micrometer. This functionality allows scientists to easily study and observe micro-organisms that dwell in and aroudn the reef without intruding on them or harming them in any way.
