Winterized Pedestrian Bridges

Tullhus Bridge is Heated to Prevent a Dangerous Iced-Over Conditions

Think about the time and resources that could be saved if more urban infrastructure was designed with the ingenuity of the Tullhus Bridge. A clever heating system has been installed so that the walkway will not allow snow and ice to collect during the colder months of the year.

Located between the Strömsholmen residential area and the city center of Norrköping near Stockholm, Sweden, this brand new fixed link will not require any salting or plowing in the wintertime. Pedestrians can use it consistently without risking the injuries that are associated with frozen precipitation and its accumulation.

Erik Andersson Architects made this possible by creating a broad duct beneath the footpath and channeling hot air through it. This solution allowed for the compact form and concentrated heating of the 70-meter steel Tullhus Bridge.
