Disaster Seismogram Art

The Tohoku Japanese Earthquake Sculpture is Based on a Graph

The Tohoku Japanese Earthquake Sculpture pays tribute to the natural disasters that ravaged Japan earlier this year. This incredibly intricate sculpture was modeled after a nine minute excerpt of the seismogram, which is a record of the ground motion at a particular measuring station that was taken of the earthquake and tsunami.

Conceived and created by artist Luke Jerram, the work used a rapid prototyping machine to print out the Tohoku Japanese Earthquake Sculpture as a stunning three-dimensional rendition of that graphical information. This delicate work of art measures 30cm by 20cm.

The Tohoku Japanese Earthquake Sculpture is set to appear at the Jerwood Space in London for a show aptly titled Terra. Other works by Jerram will also be showcased.
