Tiny Transformative Apartments

Christian Schallert Redesigns His Home on a Daily Basis

There's more to this tiny apartment than meets the eye.

At first glance, Christian Schallert's urban Barcelona apartment appears to be completely empty. The single 258-square-foot room contains not a single piece of furniture, and the walls are all bare. Look a little closer and use some imagination, however, and this tiny apartment has endless potential. With the help of designer Barabara Appolloni, Schallert created his tiny transformative apartment with houseboats in mind; all of his furniture is cleverly concealed behind, and within, wall cabinetry. He simply has to pull, open, or drop various elements of the room, and voila, an entire home emerges!

He relates his home to LEGO blocks, explaining that he is constantly creating and changing his living space to serve his needs. For example, his bed is stored beneath his porch and can easily slide into the apartment. When pushed back beneath the porch, it also acts as a couch, bench, and staircase. This multipurpose furniture allows the apartment to accommodate Schallert's every need. It even keeps him in shape, as building your home on a daily basis is a great workout!

Compact apartments like Schallert's are ideal for bustling urban cities, and definitely prove that less really can be more.
