Kirra Cheers Becomes a Modern-Day Tinderella

Photographer Kirra Cheers braved the shark-infested waters of the dating world for her latest series 'Tinderella.'

Theoretically, dating in a digital age is supposed to be easier: you can find people with whom you have more in common with, faster. Unfortunately, the absence of face-to-face contact inhibits communication, making the experience decidedly less personal, and easier to abort. Cheers attempted to capture the awkward-yet-exhilarating experience of online dating, going on an exhaustive 17 first dates over a two-month period. Of those 17, 11 allowed Cheers to take their portrait, a decision which Cheers felt was reflective of the subjects' self-esteem.

The fact that Cheers was behind the lens created a "swapping of traditional gender roles." She notes that, once your tamper with the power dynamic, you can achieve the same result with either gender. Overall, she found the experience to be empowering, saying, "A mentor suggested that this process of objectifying men was similar to collecting butterflies – a comparison I greatly enjoy."
