Standing atop a mountian peak like a gigantic boulder, the Timmeljoch Museum is a gravity-defying piece of modern European architecture. Set amongst the Alps in the town of Tyrol, which sits at the Austria-Italy border, the miniature museum contains history about the treacherous mountain pass explorers, climbers and travelers had to endure.
When Werner Tscholl was asked to build a roadside museum high up in the Alps, he wanted to design a building that would sit in harmony with the landscape around it. The main concept was to construct the building to make it look like a naturally intergrated part of the landscape. Tscholl and his team of architects envisioned a structure that would emulate a protruding rock face or massive boulder.
To mainatain the topography of the area, Tscholl took a minimalist approach, using complimentary shapes and colors in his design.
