Prison Tattoo Gun Portraits

Things Get Better by Scott Campbell Depicts Handmade Frankenguns

The Things Get Better art exhibit revolves around the theme of Frankenguns, which are tattoo guns that have been handmade in prison by inmates. Although actual photographs of such tools would be incredibly to see, this series focuses on realistic ink wash paintings on paper.

Painted by tattooist and artist Scott Campbell, the Things Get Better exhibit is being hosted at OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles, California. Hypebeast reveals, "The culmination of two years of research involving trips inside Mexican prisons to learn about these machines, Campbell’s latest project is a true labor of love for the artist." Interestingly, all of the ink contraptions captured in the series are from his own imagination.

Essentially, Things Get Better explores notions of invention and reinvention with the underlying concept of human ingenuity threaded throughout.
