The Strawscraper Morphs Stockholm’s Söder Torn into a Wind Farm

Swedish design studio Belatchew Arkitekter aims to turn one of Stockholm’s tallest residential towers into the Strawscraper. The tower in question is the Söder Torn, a 282-foot tower that designed by the Danish architect Henning Larsen. The Strawscraper would add an additional 16 stories to the tower (the tower’s height was cut by 16 stories before its completion). The extra stories would be covered in hairy straws that would move with the wind and generate electricity using piezoelectric technology.

The extra stories would be multifunctional, with Belatchew Arkitekter aiming to add more apartments, a restaurant, sky lounge and a lookout platform. The aim of the project is to generate clean electricity in a quiet manner. No word on how much electricity the straws could generate, but it would be a major win if the Strawscraper could become self-sustaining.
Trend Themes
1. Wind Energy Generation - The Strawscraper's hairy straws utilize piezoelectric technology to generate electricity, tapping into the trend of sustainable energy sources.
2. Multifunctional Architecture - The addition of more apartments, a restaurant, sky lounge, and lookout platform to the Strawscraper demonstrates the trend of integrating multiple functions into a single structure.
3. Quiet Energy Solutions - The Strawscraper's goal of generating clean electricity in a quiet manner aligns with the trend of developing noiseless energy solutions for urban environments.
Industry Implications
1. Renewable Energy - The Strawscraper highlights opportunities for the renewable energy industry to explore innovative ways of harnessing wind power.
2. Real Estate and Construction - The multifunctional design of the Strawscraper presents opportunities for the real estate and construction industry to create more versatile and sustainable residential and commercial buildings.
3. Hospitality and Tourism - The addition of a restaurant, sky lounge, and lookout platform to the Strawscraper indicates potential for the hospitality and tourism industry to offer unique experiences in eco-friendly architectural spaces.
