'The Petals Dress' is a Garment Made Using 4D Printing Technology

Massachusetts-based design studio 'Nervous System' recently debuted a 4D-printed garment called The Petals Dress. As 3D printing becomes more accessible, designers are finding new ways to demonstrate the limitless potential of the technology.

The Petals Dress was debuted as part of the #Techstyle exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The dress was made using a technique known as 4D printing, which involves using a 3D printer to print large objects with articulated joints as a single piece. One removed from the printer, these items can change shape to reveal their multidimensional design. This particular dress is made up of 1,600 different pieces that are held together by more than 2,600 hinges.
