The Lotus Lamp Is Constructed out of Material that Blooms Once Heated

The Lotus Lamp is designed to double as an aroma diffuser and a table lamp. Its unique design boasts a modular function. The material used to make the lampshade is designed to bloom once heated from the lamp's light bulb. Industrial designer Ye JJ aimed to combine the natural appeal of biophilic design with modern technology.

Using 3D printing and the magic of smart material, the lamp was designed with traditional lantern-making techniques. JJ used shape-memory alloy material due to its ability to remember two shapes: one when the material is heated and another one the material is cooled. This creates a blooming effect in tandem with its scent-diffusing abilities. Users can experience the lamp's soothing aroma as the lampshade opens up to reveal its light.
