End-Of-Life Comfort Droids

The Last Moment Robot Consoles Dying Patients

The Last Moment Robot tackles one of the human race's most common fears -- dying alone.

Developed as part of an interactive art installation, the droid was created by Rhode Island School of Design student Dan Chen. In a world increasingly dominated by technology, the need for human interaction has been somewhat overshadowed by the desire to advance technology.

The robot strokes patients' arms and softly tells them that it is there for them in a robotic and machine-like way.

While the machine does caresses the arm of dying patients and assures them that it is there to guide them through their last breathing moments on Earth, it was designed to be plastic and cold -- a jab at the fact that although robots can do a great deal for society, they can never replace human-to-human contact and compassion.
