'The Great Expedition' Series Tracks a French Expedition

Denmark-based graphic design student Thorbjorn Gudnason has captured the mountainous beauty of Val Thorens, France in his 'The Great Expedition' collection. A black and white series, the photos reveal snippets of a freezing cold environment that has been braved time and time again by adventure-seeking troops of dedicated individuals.

The Gudnason images are incredibly detailed. Although set in a challenging region that presents multiple barriers to well-orchestrated photo shoots, the artist has managed to capture highly-detailed footprint snapshots, a choice that fits well with the difficult nature of the climb. Through his depiction of the French venture, Gudnason has demonstrated that it is often the nature of the ascent rather than the mastery of the summit that matters most to alpine treks.
