The Festival de Ideias Bankrolls Community Innovation

The Festival de Ideias (Festival of Ideas) is an event intended to hear community suggestions and subsequently fund them; it's the first of its kind in the troubled Brazilian city of Sao Paolo.

Months ago, the website Mandalah São Paulo selected three pressing issues that threaten Brazilian society: violence, natural catastrophes and urban mobility. After openly asking for projects, it received more than 300 applications with attached plans with four weeks. The community-inspiring website whittled those entries down to 20, which were then presented at the Festival de Ideias by their respective planners. Eventually more than $6,000 was supplied to fund neighborhood gardens, youth seminars, bicycle lanes and a host of other concepts.

In world regions where tax appropriations aren't used toward building infrastructure, it falls on the shoulders of socially conscious businesses like Mandalah's to help improve the lot of bereft communities.
