Stacked modular units were created by Richard Rogers to provide temporary housing in the London borough of Merton. The prefabricated homes were placed in a vacant lot to provide affordable social housing for the much-needed community.
Each unit took roughly a week to construct and Rogers believes innovation like this will better provide housing for those in need. The offsite construction allows for a more efficient construction time compared to that of traditional high-rises. What makes the project attractive for cities is its modular nature. As demand for social housing increases, it is much easier to expand Rogers' design than other housing options. By simply stacking the units on top of each other, this design eliminates the need to build from the ground up.
The proposed rent is 65% of local market value which Rogers hopes can help tenants save money towards a purchase of their own property.
