The Synaesynth System Reinterprets Colors, Forms and Movement as Sound

Cutting-edge technology is allowing people to make music in some pretty unconventional ways, with the Synaesynth serving as a fascinating example. Designed by Daniel Kerris, the laptop-enabled system can create unique tunes that are inspired by works of art, your very own face and the view out of a window.

The Synaesynth control panel can be connected to your computer's webcam, or a separate camera in order to function. Now, as the viewfinder picks up different shapes and colors and detects movement and its speed, the virtual virtuoso conjures up percussion noises to rhythms, beats, amplitudes and pitches that relate the various qualities of what has been sensed visually. The Synaesynth can even be taken into the car to create a real-time soundtrack of a road trip.
