Christ & Gantenbein's Swiss National Museum extension embodies a stark and industrial design aesthetic. The add-on is concrete-clad and features heavy and geometric volumes that are juxtaposed against a more traditional existing building.
"The raw concrete chosen by Christ & Gantenbein, stands in contrast to the historical stone structure designed by architect Gustav Gull in the late 19th century," says Archiscene about the project.
A courtyard is located between the Swiss National Museum's existing 19th century structure and its contemporary addition, adding a touch of nature to an otherwise bare and stone-infused scene. Despite of its layered concrete finishes and industrial air, this project also boasts unexpected elements like spherical window cutouts that create interesting light modulation effects and patterns.
