Don Kwaning Finds Creative Uses for Wetland Weed

Designers have been focusing on finding creative and innovative ways to be mindful of the environment and sustainable packaging material is definitely a hot topic. Don Kwaning — a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, contributes to this category with an interesting product. A part of his 'Medulla' project, the young creative finds uses for "Soft Rush" which is a wetland weed in "woodlands, marshes, ditches, and grasslands."

The true benefit of this sustainable packaging material comes from the fact that soft rush grows quickly and is found in abundance. Currently, Don Kwaning is separating the pith from the fibers and utilizing the former part as foam material and the later as paper, corrugated cardboard, rope and more.
