This Educational Facility Puts Sustainable Design into Practice

Dutch studio Bureau SLA recently designed a learning center that puts sustainable design into practice. When it comes to educating consumers about environmentalism, it is important to practice what you preach.

The Nature & Environment Learning Centre is an educational program aimed at teaching children about sustainability. The program's first purpose-built facility is located in Amsterdam's Noord district and it houses an office, a canteen and several classrooms. The architects put sustainable design into practice by constructing an energy-neutral structure. To achieve this feat, the architects gave the structure an angular design that maximizes the efficiency of the solar panels embedded on the roof. The surrounding walls consists of timber slats reinforced with bitumen weatherproofing. The building even boasts a passive heating and cooling system.
