Retina-Repairing Robots

This Eye Surgery Robot Helps Perform Retinal Membrane Operations

The Robotic Retinal Dissection Device, awesomely abbreviated to R2D2, is an eye surgery robot that can be used by surgeons perform highly complicated and precise operations.

Funded as part of a collaboration between the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation and Dutch charity Zizoz, this eye surgery robot can be remotely controlled and is capable of precisely operating inside the eye. It is capable of going in and out of the eye through a hole of a diameter of less than a millimeter. The surgery robot also helps control for surgeons' hand tremors which, however subtle, can have a damaging impact. The robot is capable of carrying out movements to a precision level of a 1000th of a millimeter.

This high-tech eye surgery robot is a great example of modern robotic technologies serving the medical community and improving patient outcomes.
