The Conceptual 'Subtle Lamp' Changes According to the Shade Position

The conceptual 'Subtle Lamp' is an interactive decor item for the home that features an unlikely control system to encourage space inhabitants to get up close and personal with it. Designed by Philipp Emrich for Gantri, the lamp requires users to gently interact with it to achieve the illumination they desire. This is done by raising or lowering the lampshade to provide brighter illumination when at the top and softer when reaching the bottom before finally turning off when at the base.

The conceptual 'Subtle Lamp' was explained by Emrich to Yanko Design when he said that, "The bedside lamp is informed by my model of agency, geometric considerations, sensory communication and a sensibility towards the user‘s subjective authorship. The light turns on when you lift the lamp head up and slowly fades off when you push it back to the base. This interaction can for example be understood as sunrise and sunset but it is open to the user to interpret it."
