Google is Creating a Subsea Cable Between Portugal and South Africa

Google has announced its latest project titled Equiano, which is a subsea cable that will run from Portugal to South Africa. The design will be built by Alcatel Submarine Networks, with construction set for 2021. This will be the first subsea cable that will utilize optical switching at its fiber pair level.

This project will also create a large upgrade to the infrastructure between the countries, this cable will be able to handle 20 times more capacity than the previous one in use. This cable will also have units that branch off, which will connect to other countries along the cable's path. The cable will be first connected to Lagos, Nigeria, with other sections being built along the way.

The subsea cable gets its name, Equaino, from a Nigerian writer Olaudah Equiano.
