Ideas to better protect the world from the next great storm

Every year at least a handful of powerful storms re-enforce the need for protective storm safety measures. With Typhoon Haiyan and Sandy in the past few years there have been ideas to better prepare for the inevitable vengeful return of Mother Nature.

The initial point that many major cities are built close to water is not only true but frightening given how devastating flooding can be. With this knowledge the ONE prize competition asked people to come up with ideas to protect these cities from from watery destruction.

The winning designs include a network of wetlands around Tokyo acting as a dam to stop rising water, a new island for Staten Island and a coral barrier in Indonesia. While the ideas seem radical there was legitimate research put into each and there are legitmate explanations for each. Now if only we could figure out how to deal with the ice storms in Toronto.
