Phantasmagorical Building Facades

The Star Palace

Projecting or installing spectacular lighted images on a building’s exterior is a commonplace practice for casinos and hotels in tourist destinations such as Las Vegas.

This phantasmagorical lighted moire pattern is the exterior of the Star Palace department store in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The Star Palace is widely known for its "wow" factor, and this facade display created by UN Studio is no exception. The concept behind the design is "to prepare the shopper for the void inside."

Designed as a sun screen and weather barrier, the exterior designs at the Star Palace constantly change, producing different visual effects to the customers as they travel the spiral escalators through the various floors of the store.
