Colosseum-Inspired Soccer Stadiums

The Stadio Della Roma Aims to Make Players Feel Like Gladiators

Italian soccer team AS Roma are one of two fierce rival teams based in the city of Rome, and they believe their new stadium—the Stadio Della Roma—will make them the elite Roman team. The stadium design is inspired by the Colosseum, the historical amphitheater located in the center of the Italian capital.

Despite the fierce rivalry between AS Roma and cross-town rivals Lazio, the two teams currently share a stadium, making for a financially sensible but otherwise awkward relationship. But AS Roma’s new stadium, due to be completed in time for the 2016-2017 season, will be theirs and theirs alone.

The Stadio della Roma has architectural elements that invoke the Colosseum, as well as other additions that will aim to infuse a sense of gladiatorial spectacle into AS Roma’s games. A hydraulic lift with allow the players a dramatic entrance akin to those made by ancient gladiators. The stadium will have a capacity of 52,000 and will boast a carbon-neutral energy footprint, recycling capabilities and high-tech renewable energy technology.

The stadium was designed by architecture studio Woods Bagot, and is expected to cost about $400 million.
