The Sports Drive Logger Infues Real Driver Data into a Video Game

The Sports Drive Logger is a device that records car and driver data and incorporates it into a video game virtual car and driver. The technology is the result of a collaboration between automaker Toyota and Sony Computer Entertainment, and will infuse real-life driving data into the Gran Turismo 6 car-racing video game. The technology will be available in the Toyota 86, also known as the GT86 or Scion FR-S.

The Sports Drive Logger device connects with the car's controller network and GPS system to collect all kinds of performance data. The collected data includes speed, accelerator pedal input, steering angles, brake operation and gear-shifting data. This data assesses not just the car's performance, but the driver's contribution toward its performance.

The data can then be uploaded to the Gran Turismo 6, where virtual drivers can go head-to-head based on their real-life driving performance. Sports Drive Logger users can also compare their data to that of professional drivers to improve their driving skills.

The Sports Drive Logger will be launched in Japan for $900. There is no word yet on the technology's release in other markets.
