Asian-Inspired Standing Eateries

Spoken English Fuses Japanese Tachinomiya's with Western Flavors

Tucked inside the new Line Hotel is the standing-room-only eatery known as Spoken English. This restaurant is the latest venture from chef Erik Bruner-Yang and features an eclectic menu that houses items with an Asian style influence. Originally conceptualized to be a tasting menu spot, the final version of Spoken English has instead settled on an a la carte style and pays homage to the tachinomiya bars in Japan. This tachinomiya can be seen in the eateries offerings, but can also be felt in the standing-only space, communal tables and celebration of beer and sake-focused cocktails.

With a tight menu of just 19 dishes, Spoken English tends to focus on grilled options and includes gourmet skewers, small plates, larger offerings and a pair of elegant desserts. Some of the standout dishes on the menu include the family-style duck, Green Hill camembert, a savory caviar dish, wagyu kushiyaki, herb-speckled prawn and a gorgeous chicken skin dumpling. The fairly small kitchen is currently run by Chefs de cuisine Matthew Crowley and James Wozniuk who masterfully execute Bruner-Yang's vision. With Asian fusion restaurants becoming more popular, restaurants like Spoken English find a way to carve out a unique space with a particular focus on one style and innovative spaces.
