Intricate Circular Gardens

The South London Gallery Garden Features a Swirling Brick Pattern

The new South London Gallery garden, designed by Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco, features a swirling brick pattern punctuated by circles of various sizes. The bricks cleverly combine individually simple lines such that the overall pattern is one of immense complexity.

The traditional conception of a British garden is one that gives a sense of a complete lack of control (despite the gardener having dominion over his or her plants in reality.) Such a constructed wilderness is opposed to Orozco's design, however. In fact, the South London Gallery seems to be more in line with the French gardening tradition, in which the garden is meant to appear highly ordered and under control -- in a word, unnatural. Orozco's meticulous laid brick patterns demonstrate careful planning rather than controlled wilderness.
