Walk and Text on the Smartphone Sidewalk in China

The Chinese city of Chongqing has created a smartphone sidewalk lane for mobile users who can't seem to pry their eyes away from their game of Candy Crush.

The mobile phone sidewalk lane is 50 meters long and 3 meters wide, throughout the length of the sidewalk there are warning sides painted in white, as well as a line demarcating the border between the smartphone lane, and non-smartphone lane. With a population of almost 30 million and high cell phone ownership rates, the city is hoping that the smartphone sidewalk will help with congestion, and more importantly prevent collisions between pedestrians.

While it remains to be seen if the smartphone sidewalk will be effective, it certainly speaks to the degree with which the city considers walking and mobile phone use to be a serious issue.
