Italian sculptor Erica Buzzi has teamed up with fellow artisans and prosthetic limb makers to create these life-like silicone material appendages.
Utilizing 3D printer technology, Buzzi is able to create prosthetic appendages made from a realistic synthetic silicone material. The limbs look remarkably similar to human skin and are hard to distinguish from the real thing even when placed next to a regular human appendage. These high-definition silicone prosthetics are currently expensive to manufacture but Buzzi and her associates hope to refine the process to eventually lower costs and increase availability.
Buzzi uses a scanner to capture the mirror image of a patient's remaining appendage to create a prosthetic for an amputee that is as similar to the original limb as possible. Future improvements in technology will hopefully make the process of capturing, printing and detailing silicone implants even easier and affordable.
