For Urban Cycling Safety, These Gloves Keep Motorists Informed of Turns

Bridging the gap between manual bicycle safety practices and hi-tech bike add-ons is this signal glove. The long-used method for cyclists to inform drivers about upcoming right and left turns is to simply stick out their arms; yet this gesture is insufficient in the dark of night.

Sandra Catalina Chavarro Morales won a 2014 Red Dot design Award for an idea that enhances the visibility of the manual indicator. Essentially, she created an ergonomic bicycle glove with sensors in the forefingers. They can be effortlessly switched on to illuminate the back of the wearer's hand. When the biker extends his arm in the conventional fashion, this turning signal will be visible to all on the road, thanks to electroluminescent strips that glow bright green.
