Lengthy Wood-Covered Bridges

'Shimen Bridge' Has Been Covered with Artful Wooden Arches

Built in the 1950s using traditional stone masonry, Shimen Bridge is a fundamental icon of the economic and cultural connection between the towns of Shimen and Shimenyu in Hunan province, China. Not only that, but the bridge ties into a system of damming and water management that has driven the local irrigation systems for over 1,500 years. With all that history carried over the waters of the Songyin River, DnA, the architecture studio tasked with refurbishing the bridge, was tasked with both restoring and preserving — and the result is a perfectly complementary mix.

Shimen Bridge is several hundred meters long, and yet DnA opted to cover it with wooden arches. That's an ambitious decision, but it pays deference to the historic Wind and Rain Bridge, making it culturally relevant for the area.
