The SFPark App Allows Drivers to Find Real-Time Parking Lot Openings

The city of San Francesco has created the SFPark app, which allows drivers to find available parking spots in the city. The $20 million project involves installing special meters with parking sensors around the city that provide real-time information on available spots and create demand-responsive pricing. The prices in highly occupied areas go up, while empty areas go down until they reach as low as 25 cents.

This dynamic pricing model reduces congestion; however, the app has its limitations. Using the app while driving can distract drives and increase accidents; what's more, checking for available spot before leaving for your destination may alert you of spots that may not be available upon your arrival. The app is not perfectly accurate, but the city claims 90 percent consistency. Despite the limitations, the app has 12,000 users.
