Mexican studio Arquitectura en Movimiento Workshop designed an apartment in Mumbai featuring a sculptural wooden staircase.
The U-shaped staircase acts as a statement feature for the apartment. Situated in the center of the space, the staircase acts as a unifying component. The three-sided design, which is located in front of a double-height window, is made up of open treads, allowing light to filter inside. The first three steps are stand-alone structures, sitting independent of one another, while the rest of the treads curve upwards, each one becoming narrower and taller than the one preceding it, to create a continuous element.
A metal structure anchored to the wall surrounds the staircase on both sides, while vertical steel cables function as both a support system and hand rail.
