Ingenious Notched Seating

The Scandi Chair Looks Nicked, but These Clefts Are Quite Useful

You can tell that the Scandi Chair was not nicked by accident, but it may not be immediately clear why carefully cut chunks of material have been removed from the backrest and the frame. The charming whitewashed archetypal chair is certainly given more character, but these unusual physical features serve another purpose, of course.

Emma Nilsson, Johanna Westin and Lisa Frode of EJL Design hid a little storage compartment beneath the seat. The angular indentation here allows you to slide your hand inside so that you can lift open the hinged lid. The beveling at the top right corner of the Scandi Chair is quite practical too. The notch creates a peg, from which one can hang a jacket, a hat or a bag.
