Samsung's Latest 980 Pro 1TB SSD Features a Passive Air Cooler

The Samsung 980 Pro is a new one or two-terabyte solid-state drive (SSD) from the South Korean electronics manufacturer. The 980 Pro improves upon the previous iterations of Samsung SSDs by featuring a built-in passive air cooler via a nickel heatsink.

The new heatsink-equipped Samsung SSDs boast a drastically improved terabytes-written (TBW) endurance level as a result of their lower temperature while operating under load. The one-terabyte model reportedly boasts a TBW of 600, while the two-terabyte model features a 1,200TBW.

In addition to their improved TBW, the Samsung 980 Pro SSDs achieve ultra-fast read speeds of up to 7gb/s as well as write speeds of up to 5gb/s. This speed comes at the cost of heightened operating temperatures, leading to the choice to include a built-in nickel heatsink on each unit.
