Safety-Focused Baby Boxes

The Safe Haven Baby Boxes are Designed to Keep Abandoned Newborns Safe

In an effort to keep abandoned newborns safe and healthy, Indiana is installing Safe Haven baby boxes across the state. While it seems unthinkable, many unwanted babies are abandoned on doorsteps and other hazardous locations. This initiative aims to give parents a safe alternative when it comes to giving up a newborn child.

The Safe Haven Baby Boxes are part of a new effort to keep unwanted newborns safe, while still protecting the anonymity of the parents. The baby boxes look similar to mail slots and they are installed in churches, fire stations and hospitals across the state. All of the boxes are equipped with heating and cooling units, as well as ADT trips that notify emergency personal within 30 seconds of a child being placed in the box. The idea behind the boxes is to give parents an opportunity to safely surrender their child without the need for a face-to-face interaction.

By taking the face-to-face component out of the interaction, the Safe Haven Baby Boxes can help to combat the issue of illegal abandonments.
