Roof-Mounted Car Airbags

These Roof-Mounted Airbags Open Up More Room on Car Dashboards

American automotive systems manufacturer TRW Automotive developed these innovative roof-mounted airbags, which will be installed in the new Citroen C4 Cactus.

The new airbag systems consist of a cushion, a gas diffusion channel and a gas generator, which are all contained within a housing located either on or below the headlining located above the windscreen in the C4 Cactus. When activated, the airbag cushion fills up with gas before inflating and unfolding in front of the windshield to protect passengers from impact on the event of a collision.

The roof-mounted airbags take the place of passenger airbags typically located in the dashboard. This frees up more space for dashboard-based electronics, controls and storage space, and allows for greater flexibility in the design of vehicle interiors.
