A Dutch designer has created Robirds, robotic raptors that can be used to keep birds away from the paths of aircraft, crop fields and landfills where they can cause danger, disease and straight-up nuisance.
The Robirds are remotely controlled but look like real birds, flapping their wings and flying in a manner that makes them look remarkably real. These birds can fly in and around problem areas and encourage nuisance birds to leave by exploiting their natural instinct to avoid predators through silhouette and wing movement recognition.
The falcon Robird model can reach speeds of 80 km/h and can scare away birds weighing up to 3 kg.
The system is completely controllable by remote-control-wielding operators, making it possible to single out stubborn birds and chase them away. The robots will eventually be made autonomous, with its developers already conducting trials.
