Feminist Rage Video Games

In This Riot Grrrl-Inspired Game, Players Jump, Dance and Smash Things

Slam City Oracles is a quirky, girly video game created by game designer Jane Friedhoff and inspired by the riot grrrl movement.

Friedhoff says that the game was born from a lot of the frustrations that come with being a female game designer. The industry has a notoriously bad track record when it comes to respectful treatment of its women members. Slam City Oracles, she says, was a way to find an uplifting, anger-venting escape from this reality. In true riot grrrl spirit, the game is about "two female characters having a really good time with each other, ignoring the outside world, taking up a lot of space, and using their bodies as a force."

In the game, the animated characters dance so hard that they cause planetary destruction, high-fiving giant slices of pizza along the way to the music of Scully, a Brooklyn-based, women-fronted rock band. It's a playful, unapologetic riot grrrl romp.
