Solar Panelled Heritage Trains

This Eco-Friendly Restored Train in Australia Runs on Solar Power

This restored train will appeal to both heritage train enthusiasts as well as eco crusaders. Located in New South Wales, Australia, the Byron Bay Railroad Company is running the world's first truly solar train.

The Lithgow Railway Workshop restored the "derelict heritage train" to operate on power derived from the sun. It's equipped with roof solar panels sourced from a local supplier called Enova. The solar panel-covered train features custom-created curved panels that can be charged at trackside stations. The restored train also has a regenerative braking system, where every time the brakes are applied, a quarter of the energy used is recovered.

The Byron Bay Train is being used for public transportation purposes and is just one example of how cities can move towards a more sustainable future.
