In an effort to reduce plastic waste and help environmentally minded consumers easily access refill stations, Beiersorf is resting a refill station for Nivea shower gels. In a drugstore chain in Hamburg and Karlsruhe, the German cosmetics company is offering a simple way for consumers to replenish their empty bottles of the Nivea Creme Soft or the Nivea Creme Sensitive shower gel.
With this solution, plastic bottles can be refilled up to three times using a special barcode. After this point, consumers are asked to return their bottle for the sake of hygiene, so that it can be properly recycled—and they will get a new bottle and a first filling for free.
As Caroline Zia, R&D Senior Engineer at Beiersdorf, describes: "We see the concept as a start for offering consumers individual products in the future that match their own wishes right in the store."
