Gratuitous Subway Rides

Singapore's Subway System Offers Free Rides to Reduce Rush Hour Traffic

In an effort to reduce rush hour traffic, the Ministry of Transport Singapore implemented a unique incentive—commuters can board the subway first thing in the morning ahead of the crowds, without having to pay.

With peak travelling happening after 8 am, the MRT began offering free admission before 7:45 to cut down on congestion and make everybody's job easier. Although it means making slight adjustments to your morning routine, there are about 7% of commuters in Singapore who have been taking the subway at this earlier time period, to regularly save themselves money. As well as meaning there will be happier subway riders, this is also extremely beneficial to the subway system over the long run, since off-peak trains are not as costly to operate.
