Real-Life Facial Filters

The Halo Device Serves as a Real-Life Instagram Filter

'Halo' is a new device that helps users put their best face forward through the use of a real-life Instagram filter. Many people already enjoy using filters to give their photos a different look and now the same can be done with real-life facial expressions.

Halo was created by PhD student Nan Zhao for the Responsive Environments Group at MIT's Media Lab. The device works by using photographic and lighting design in order to create the look of a real-life Instagram filter. By using different lighting compositions, the device can make the wearer appear happy, sad, energetic, angry or anxious. The user can easily flip between these filters by using the Bluetooth-connected app or they can let the device change automatically by adapting to the user's surroundings.

Beyond helping users take better selfies, the device could also serve as an excellent tool for creating different characters on stage or in films.
