Rainbow-Adorned Train Stations

Amsterdam Station Becomes 'Rainbow Station' After Dusk

For a brief time after sunset every day for the next year, Amsterdam Central Station will sport a spectacular rainbow projection courtesy the Rainbow Station project. The massive rainbow will be projected onto a 45 x 25 meter roof arch situated above platform 2B.

The rainbow is projected onto the arch by a four-kilowatt spotlight that spews the projection through a special crystal filter. The projection makes use of liquid crystal optics technology originally developed for research on exoplanets, but now being repurposed to delight commuters and travelers in the Dutch capital's major transit hub. The rainbow projection features a wide array of colors unmatched by smartphones and cameras.

The Rainbow Station project was timed to help celebrate the 125th anniversary of Amsterdam Central Station's opening, as well as to mark the start of the UNESCO Year of Light 2015.
