Eco-Conscious Golden Design for Rain Water Harvesting

The ingenious design taps into the roof’s drain system in order to collect rain water in common plastic bottles – recycling of these otherwise useless plastics is yet another bonus. The accumulated water may not be suitable for drinking, but is ideal for secondary activities like hand washing, house cleaning and garden irrigation.

It is worth noting that another large benefit is the employment of SODIS: an effective process by which a combination of the sun UV rays and heat removes pathogenic microorganisms that cause disease. This practice is now increasingly employed across many developing countries due to its low cost.

So, do not be fooled by the milking cow resemblance of the end arrangement. This design, by Evans Gant, received first place in the Design for Poverty competition, while its simplicity in design and application render it exemplary means to water harvesting in both advanced and developing communities.
