Rescuing an inexperienced or panicked swimmer poses a great danger for a by-stander and even for a trained lifeguard. Unsafe conditions offshore that might have caused the trouble in the first place can greatly disadvantage even the strongest swimmers.

The Radio-Controlled Life Buoy keeps assistance at a safe distance, enabling a beach supervisor to send out this hi-tech life ring from land using a handheld device. Looking much like a PS3 move controller, the gadget comprises a vertically held grip with a spherical joystick on top to set the lifesaver's direction of travel. The motorized orange flutter board can be sent a great length out to recover a swimmer and supports him on his difficult journey back to shore.

Designed by Li Weilin, Peng Shanzhong and Ju Xinxin, the Radio-Controlled Life Buoy is entirely solar powered thanks to its cell-clad docking station where it's stored with the remote.
