'Queen Girls' aims to provide young children with fairy tales and stories about real women and girls who had a positive impact on the world.
The project came to existence when its founders realized that most of the stories available for young girls feature one-dimensional characters like "the mother figure, the home maker, the exotic beauty and the love-seeker." These characters often end up promoting negative ideals in young girls rather than empowering them to create positive change and shatter glass ceilings. Queen Girls features stories about real women, with its first one being about Bessie Coleman -- who was the first African American woman to receive her pilot's license. For each book that is purchased, another is donated to a child in need.
By sharing stories that uplift and empower young girls, this project works towards ensuring that children are raised to fight for equality of the sexes.
