Smartphone-Free Donation Campaigns

The Promise or Pay 'May Day' Asks You to Kick Your Addition

Launching May 1st, the Promise or Pay May Day Campaign asks you to do the impossible: stay off of your smartphone for 24 hours. But there's something in it for you--and others--as, much like how Promise or Pay already works, if you aren't able to keep to your commitment, you must donate money to charity.

The goals of the Promise or Pay 'May Day' campaign are numerous. For one, getting off smartphones, especially in this digital age in which many individuals hyper-consume media and technology, fosters a space for friends and family to get together--and hey, maybe even go outside. Another goal, however, is to raise $100,000 for charity including ABC's and Rice, Mineke Foundation and Open Minds.

"Advancements in technology and the Internet have allowed us to connect to each other constantly, yet ironically, people will pay more attention to their phones than friends, family or possibly someone in need," founder of Promise or Pay, Jay Boolkin, said. "We hope to use this phenomenon to get people thinking about how they interact with their fellow man." Or woman, we would like to add.
