Prefabricated Pod-Based Architecture

Hopkins Architects Designed a Striking Wildlife Sanctuary

Hopkins Architects, a British design firm, created several prefabricated concrete pods to accommodate the Khor Kalba Turtle Wildlife Sanctuary in the UAE. The prefabricated concrete pods, which form the basis of the wildlife sanctuary, are set up in a series of low-profile interlocking groupings. The entire design, made up of a total of seven pods, emanates a soft, gentle esthetic with the recurrence of smooth curves and rounded ridges.

Inspired by woven baskets and patterned after local shells, the prefabricated concrete pods embody a natural design philosophy meant to be muted. The low buildings exemplify harmony and balance of humanity with nature, allowing the beauty of the surrounding mangroves and lagoon to shine through. The prefabricated concrete pods contain exhibition spaces, offices, washrooms, wildlife facilities, a classroom, a visitor center, a cafe, and a gift shop.
