The Eco-Friendly PPlanter Converts Urine into Bamboo Planting Water

Oakland based Hyphae Design Laboratory has created a public bathroom PPlanter that functions as a bamboo planter as well as a public toilet. The urinal and planter was designed to be an eco-friendly substitute for smelly public street toilets that are often dirty and carry a multitude of unknown diseases.

The PPlanter works by the user standing upright in a stall, using a disposable funnel, they urinate standing and the liquid remaining will be used to water the plants. A sink is fitted in the stall for users to wash their hands and washes the urinal through a biofilter that waters the bamboo plants. "[It] is lower cost and lower maintenance than any other kind of toilet. The openness of the design keeps people from taking over these toilets to do drugs or other unhealthy things. It makes it safer," says Darryl Smith, co-director of the Luggage Store Gallery who has hosted the PPlanter in the past.
